The history of the settlement – as proved by the excavated archaeological findings – dates back into the late Stone Age (Neolithic). The first written record about Bóly originates from 1093, from the time of St. Ladislaus, where it is mentioned under the name Bolok, as a property of the church. After the Ottoman occupation, the totally depopulated settlement became – in 1703 – the possession of Count Ádám Batthyány, who had gained significant distinction in driving out the Ottomans. During the reign of Maria Theresa, the manorial centre was populated by German serfs, the descendants of whom still live in the city today. At the end of the 19th century, the village and the manor were passed – through marriage – in the possession of the ducal Montenuovo family, and it remained theirs until 1945. The settlement, as it can be seen today, was formed during the Batthyányak-Montenuovo era, with its broad streets and public spaces with trees. After the Second World War, Hungarians from Upper Hungary and from Bihar were settled in place of those German-speaking inhabitants, who had been displaced to Germany. The bilingualism originating from the nationality composition appears in education, in culture, and in everyday life. During the decades following the change in the regime, the municipality developed the complete infrastructure in the settlement (water, wastewater, gas, road network, bicycle road network, optical network) as well as expanded and developed its Industrial Park. Bóly received the status of a city in 1997. The settlement with almost 4000 inhabitants has always fulfilled a significant role within the micro region, in the fields of education, culture, social- and healthcare, administration, and economy.
 

The Mausoleum was built in 1879 to the command of Montenuovo Vilmos’s wife, countess Julianna. The neoroman-neogothic stylish building with artistic performance is very unique in Hungary.

The exhibition can be visited in the barn of the Batthyány-Montenuovo family, which was built in 1752. It presents the early history of Bóly and the region from the neolith period until the Revolution and War of Independence.

Revelry in the wine-cellar village on Easter Monday

Emmausz is more than a 100 year old habit, originally a german tradition in Bóly. On Easter Monday the owners of the cellars are waiting for their friends and relatives with delicious wines of the countryside. Emmaus was enrolled in 2011 on The National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Hungary.
 

First Saturday in September

Local people know the famously good chicken paprika of the harvest, which is made with long juice and noodle. The owners of the cellars are thanking with this meal their friends and relatives for their help at the harvest. We organise the festival to popularize this tradition, which attracts more and more tourists.
